About
ARA is an innovative architectural project proposed for the urban development of the historic center of Boltaña. The work aims to become a visual icon of the Pyrenees and an example model of economic and cultural development of rural areas.
The idea comes from the need to sift the sun’s rays during the hot summer days. The project also incorporates vegetation and public furniture in the central square of the town, in order to encourage life and coexistence in it.

Concept
The project is inspired by the waters of the Ara River, the last wild river of the Pyrenees and the most representative element of Boltaña. The flow of water is responsible for marking the design line of organic shapes and fluid geometries.
One of the objectives of the project is to replicate the river’s good atmosphere – meeting point for all generations – in the Plaza Mayor itself.
Project Description
1) Textile Architecture
The project includes the installation of a detachable textile structure that serves as a sieve for the sun in the summer months and that at night becomes an illuminated sculpture capable of generating different environments.
The textile sculpture, manufactured with fibers of high tenacity and protection against UV rays, generates a shield to reflect the sun during the summer months. These fibers form a net, this shape favores the breeze and the cooling of the space. Once the summer season is over, the textile sculpture can be easily removed.
Materiality of the textile sculpture
The screening of the solar rays prevents the accumulation of heat in the ground and stone facades, thus along with the vertical gardens generates a more pleasant environment.
2) Lighting
The project incorporates the lighting of the large textile sculpture to generate an attractive night atmosphere for events and festivities.
The illuminated sculpture will create different environments with color transitions and intensity regulation.
3) Vegetation
The project also includes the introduction of three large plant sculptures as an example of the implementation of new digital architecture methodologies and the integration of green surfaces into architectural elements. In this way, the structural pillars become a large intelligent garden, controlled by sensors, and capable of absorbing the CO2 emitted in the area.
The three pillars to support the textile become three sculptural gardens.
The Vertical Gardens are equipped with the latest sensor technology and automatic drip irrigation.
4) Furniture
The public furniture is an important factor to encourage the revitalization of the Central Square, invites visitors to take a break in their walk and sit or lie down to enjoy the views offered by the environment.
Due to the diversity of events that occur in the town, a modular furniture system is designed, which allows to move it and adapt it to the different needs of each moment.
The furniture collection is created by the same conceptual line that marks the project, fluid lines inspired by the movement of water, supported on stone blocks, as if it were the riverbed. Stone and wood are the materials chosen to make the public benches, traditional materials that have conditioned the architecture of the Pyrenean context.

ARA Project aims to create a bridge between tradition and innovation, in an example of how rural areas can develop and become a pole of cultural, social and economic attraction and thus encourage the settlement of new population.
